Good Practices

Leiria (P)

What concerns volunteering, our institution has carried out several actions:
• Students and staff donate old clothes, stuffed animals, toys and non–perishable food that are organized in several Christmas
baskets and delivered to families in need.
• This year a class has organized a Got Talent contest. To attend the show, each student / teacher had to purchase a ticket which cost
2 non-perishables to be given to charity institutions.
• The school has organized an event to collect blankets to be donated to hospitals and homeless shelters.
• Students from families in need are entitled to have their meals for free and to take dinner home. At the weekend the families of
these students are given hot meals to take home.
• Some students have ‘adopted’ an elderly person in a local retirement home and spend time reading or doing fun activities with the
ones who lack close relatives / family.
• Our school shelters 2 stray dogs that are fed and taken care of by students.
• We are an Eco-School awarded a Green Flag and some projects have been organized to serve the purposes of this national program
– Encouraging young people to actively protect their environment; it starts in the classroom, expands to the whole school and
eventually fosters changes in the community at large. In this program, students have organized activities, such as collecting
hardware and heavy domestic appliances (under a national competition won by our school); collecting old clothes and books to be
recycled and implementing several actions in the community for awakening environmental consciousness and promoting
community health
